My favorite banned or frequently challenged book of this year is Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs. And my favorite of all time is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This is one of my all time favorite books ever, I actually went through a phase when I was in middle school where I wanted to name my first born son Jem after Jeremiah Finch. (Actually, I still really like that name and I might just have to use it for real)

This week’s question is:

What book that hasn't been turned into a movie (yet) would you most like to see on the big screen, and who would you like cast as your favorite character?

This is a really tough question, because I usually don't like the movie version that much when books are turned into movies, but maybe if I would be able to choose the actors, I'd like them better.

I have a lot of books that I really love that I don't think would make a good movie because of their length, or the complicated subject matter. I think in order for a movie based on a book to be successful, the book has to be short, or there has to be multiple movies per book so nothing is lost.  Also, the books I tend to like the most have a lot of inner diologue and unless, the movie has a running narrative you lose a lot of the oftentimes important and enlightening thoughts the character has.

So, I am going to choose The Shadow of the Wind  by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. My favorite character is Julián but I am not sure who I would want to play him. I will have to think on that for a while.

1. What do you think of reading aloud/being read to? Does it bring back memories of your childhood? Your children’s childhood?

I don't really have any strong feelings about reading aloud. I think that if I had kids and read to them I would feel differently, but at this point in my life I don't even really think about it. Sure, my parents read to me but as soon as I learned to read, I was too anxious to get through the story to wait for my mom or dad to read it (because it was a chapter a night type of thing). I found I was a faster reader and so I could devour the book at my own pace.  I don't really have any specific memories of being read to, I more remember my dad telling my younger brother and me stories that he made up. That was always more fun for me.

2. Does this affect the way you feel about audio books?

I hate audio books! I like to be able to look back at what I have read and I I like to skip ahead when a paragraph or page does not catch my attention. I also like to be able to skim if I don't have a lot of time and them be able to come back to the section later. With an audio book you can't do any of those things

3. Do you now have times when you read aloud or are read to?

When I am reading for class, I often read out loud because it helps me get a feel for the writer's writing style and in my Milton: Paradise Lost class we all have to read aloud in class because of the prose style.

Do you carry books with you out in the world? And do you ever try to hide the covers?

My answer:
Yes, I always have at least one book with me at all times. And lately, I have had at least 3 now that I am blogging because of reading for review or for just in case I have time to write start or work on a review while waiting in line or waiting for my professor who is always late.

I have hidden covers before-- you know, the ones with the half naked man on the cover but that is only when I am around young children. For the most part if I have a hardcover book I will take off the dust jacket so it does not get in the way or ruined in my purse or backpack-- not because I am trying to hide it. I embrace my dorky-ness.

What are you currently reading? I am reading Charlotte Temple for my Women Writer’s course, Robinson Crusoe for my History of the English Novel course, and I just picked up A Clash of Kings by George RR Martin again (I put it down because I was stupid and read the last chapter and I did not like what I read… I was upset because it sounded like my favorite character was dead.)

What did you recently finish reading? I just finished reading World War Z by Max Brooks, The Night Circus  by Erin Morgenstern and Juliet by Anne Fortier. Click here for the reviews

What will you read next? Not sure what I will read next. If I finish A Clash of Kings, I will probably read the 3^rd one, but other than that I guess I will just see what happens when I finish my current reads.

I think most of these books I will get around to eventually, well, except for Eat Pray Love but I have had them all on my TBR pile at one point and time or another and for some reason I just did not want to read them, so maybe it is a sign that I won’t like them. I don’t know,  guess I have to read more books I don’t like to balance out all of the good reviews on this site.

The Question:
Have you ever finished a book and loved it so much that you went right back and started re-reading it again? (And Obviously, if so , we want titles!)

I don't usually re-read books but when I love a book I will go back to it. I never start rereading right after I finish it the first time. I usually want to wait until the story is  no longer fresh in my mind so that I can be surprised all over again and I often find things that I missed the first time around because of trying to get to the end as quickly as possible to see how things turn out. When I was younger, I did it a lot more frequently than I do now because I had more time on my hands then. I re-read the Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix at least 20 times when I was in middle school. I also would read the previous Harry Potter book right before the next one would come out to refresh the story in my mind before diving into the new one. The only book I have re-read now that I am an adult is The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. I have also been meaning to re-read The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, but I have not had enough time.

If you could write yourself a part in a book, what book would it be and what role would you play in that book?

My Answer:

I tend to want to be a warrior because I am so reserved in real life and I'd love to have any sort of super power. I think the idea is so empowering. So, maybe any sort of fantasy book where there are warriors and magic. Doesn't really matter which book. I guess if I'd have to choose, I would pick Eragon.
